Stop. Think. Sort!
It’s easy. Our composting program keeps food waste out of the landfill. By taking just a little bit of extra time to compost, we're make a difference in our communities and keeping the earth a healthy place to live!
Before Sealth had composting, the janitors had to constantly empty garbage cans during lunch. With the sorting system, they only have to change bags between lunches.
Here's how it works:
-
Your 3rd period class will be lunch helpers for one week during the school year. As a lunch helper, you will be responsible for making sure that people sort their waste correctly.
-
Each class needs to assign 4-5 students per lunch every day.
-
Your 3rd period teacher will check on you during lunch so they can record your attendance. At the end of the week, teachers can deliver attendance sheets to Mr. Zeichner’s box.
Benefits:
-
You earn 30 min of service learning hours for monitoring in the lunch room.
-
You earn kickboard points. Mr. Salle will enter the points.
-
The class with the highest attendance will receive a pizza party.
-
You contribute to a healthy planet!

This video has a lot of great information, but it’s important to note:
Chief Sealth CAN compost: napkins and paper plates
We can also compost the paper food trays by stacking them on the table next to the sorting bins.
PAPER CAN BE COMPOSTED IF IT IS FOOD-SOILED.
